Practical Workplace Safety for Pest Management Professionals

This full-day workshop combines classroom instruction, demonstrations and hands-on practical activities focused on workplace safety issues relevant to pest management professionals.

Participants will receive 7 hours of instruction, with approximately 4 hours of classroom/theory and 3 hours of practical, hands-on learning.

Workshop Topics

The workshop will cover key workplace safety topics including:

  • Fall protection and fall arrest — recognizing fall hazards, equipment selection and inspection, harness fitting and practical fall-protection exercises

  • Hazard assessments — identifying hazards, assessing risk and applying appropriate controls in the field

  • Respiratory protection and fit testing — respirator selection and use, inspections, seal checks and fit-testing requirements

  • Spill response and spill kit use — assessing spills, personal safety, containment and practical use of spill-response equipment

  • Ladder safety — ladder selection, inspection, setup and safe-use practices

  • Working alone — communication, check-in procedures, emergency response and worker responsibilities

About the Instructor

Joshua Becker - AIP Safety

Joshua is a 23-year member of the Calgary Fire Department and currently serves as a Qualified District Chief. Throughout his firefighting career, he has been involved in specialized technical rescue and hazardous materials response, including High Angle Rescue and HAZMAT operations, and has responded to a wide range of chemical, biological and narcotics-related incidents.

Joshua holds a Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety from the University of Alberta and the Qualified Health and Safety Officer (QHSO) designation through the Alberta Association for Safety Partnerships (AASP). He is also currently completing his Bachelor of Applied Business – Emergency Services through Lakeland College.

In addition to his emergency services career, Joshua has extensive experience providing occupational health and safety training, consulting and emergency response support. His work includes confined space and hazardous materials assessments, fall protection, respiratory protection, development of customized training programs, interpretation and application of Alberta occupational health and safety requirements, and site-specific rescue planning and support.

His combination of frontline emergency response, technical rescue, occupational health and safety, adult education and emergency services leadership provides a practical perspective on recognizing and managing workplace hazards before they develop into emergencies.
