GOVERNMENT & REGULATORY RESOURCES

The structural pest management industry operates within a regulated framework at both the federal and provincial levels.

Who Do I Ask? Where Do I Find….?

Quick access to regulatory, certification, compliance, and technical resources.

At the federal level, pesticide products, approved uses, labels, and national pesticide regulations are managed by Health Canada through the Pesticides Regulatory Directorate (formerly PMRA). These federal regulations establish how pesticide products may be registered, labelled, sold, and used across Canada.

Federal regulatory oversight includes pesticide product registration, approved product uses, compliance monitoring, inspections, incident investigations, and enforcement activities related to pesticide use across Canada.

In Alberta, provincial pesticide requirements, applicator certification, and pest management programs are supported by multiple government ministries. Alberta Environment and Protected Areas oversees pesticide regulation and certification, while Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation manages provincial pest programs, including Alberta’s Rat Control Program.

APMA works collaboratively within this regulatory environment to support education, communication, and industry engagement by:

  • Hosting continuing education events and industry training

  • Supporting professional development opportunities for members

  • Providing opportunities for direct communication between regulators and industry professionals

  • Sharing updates regarding regulatory changes and compliance requirements

  • Participating in industry consultation and advisory discussions impacting structural pest management in Alberta

Representatives from both federal and provincial regulatory bodies frequently participate in APMA education events, helping ensure members remain informed, compliant, and current in their professional practice.
