Rat Reporting & Monitoring
High Risk Introduction Sites
Facilities that receive freight from outside Alberta are at increased risk of rat introductions, including:
Recycling facilities
Transfer stations
Food warehouses
Transport terminals
Seed or grain plants
Commercial dumpsters
Warehouse distributors
Why Reporting Matters
Early detection allows the Alberta Rat Control Program to work collaboratively with the pest industry to investigate and eliminate rats before they establish breeding populations. Reports from pest management professionals and the public are essential to maintaining Alberta's rat-free status.
Monitoring Following a Confirmed Rat Detection
Recommended actions include:
Report all rat activity to Rats@gov.ab.ca
Conduct weekly service visits until all rat activity has ceased.
Place rat-sized snap traps within bait stations to confirm and monitor activity.
Increase bait quantities up to the maximum label rate for rat control.
Continue monitoring until no further evidence of rat activity is observed.
The Agricultural Pests Act enables the Minister’s authority to declare an animal, bird, insect, plant, or disease as a pest or nuisance if it is destroying, harming, or is likely to destroy or harm any land, livestock, or property in all or part of Alberta.
The Pest and Nuisance Control Regulation, under the Agricultural Pests Act, provides a list of declared pests and nuisances in Alberta.
